A father figure is someone that gives a good example, and is the person that promises protection no matter what the situation. They also give a moral compass for the future for when they are not there.

A poor one would be one that doesn't not provide, or give any guidance at all, and either in body or spirt is absence. If they do not offer protection or safty then they are a poor father figure.

Sirius was a good father figure, because he offered Harry an escape from the Dursley's and reassured him when he thought things were falling to shit. Although Sirius was reckless, he was there for Harry and gave him a feeling of security and he fought for Harry, and in the case of the Order of the Phoenix he gave his life for him.

Harry's Father Figures

Good father figure: encouraging, there when you need them, helpful but won't baby you, gets you ready for the real world as much as he can, puts family above self.
Poor father figure: never around, neglectful, abusive, careless, puts self above family, projects own opinions into their children's lives rather than letting them make the choice for themselves.

Harry's father figures: Vernon, Sirius, Remus, Dumbledore, Arthur (to an extent maybe?)

Vernon sucked. Harry was forced to live in a closet and act essentially as a servant to them for the entire time he lived there. He was neglected and ignored and mistreated during his time with them, and Vernon never cared for him in the least.

Sirius wanted Harry to be James, which he could never be. He was reckless and careless and hated feeling useless, which led him to take risks he never should have taken. His hatred for Snape projected to Harry, and Sirius was always looking to get even with people and get revenge for things that happened to him. He acted without thinking, and though maybe we can't blame it entirely on him, Harry did much the same thing quite often.

Remus was there for Harry when he needed help in third year, and was there throughout the rest of the series. He had a slip up in the last book where he contemplated leaving his pregnant wife, but luckily Harry saw the problem and spoke his mind and it didn't affect how Harry lived too greatly.

Dumbledore was a good father figure as far as nurturing him through school and protecting him when he could (keeping him alive and well for at least his first six years at Hogwarts), but he was too secretive with Harry. He didn't tell Harry what he needed to know in order to survive and do what was required of him, leaving Harry out in the cold once he'd died.

Arthur was a minor father figure, but there nonetheless. He gave Harry a glimpse of what a happy family was like, a family with parents who love their kids and would do anything for them. Arthur was a great model for Harry to see for a family man, and though he was just his best friend's dad, I think that view of a real family probably affected him in a good way. He felt more at home with the Weasleys than anywhere else anyway.

Sooooo I think - Most beneficial: Arthur or Dumbledore. Influential: Sirius. Worst: Vernon.
